A Love Letter to Subway & Penny Tile Bathrooms

A few months ago, my parents brought up the prospect of adding master bathrooms to my brother and my homes. While I love my itty-bitty home with all my heart, I must admit that it’s seriously lacking in the “having more than one bathroom” department. So the thought of having another bathroom, let alone one all to myself, had me jumping for joy. Yet unlike other home projects, wherein I would have to lock myself away with my computer and Internet access to Pinterest and Houzz, when it came to bathrooms, I was already decided on a specific theme, materials, and fixtures. To put it simply, I love bathrooms. Love. Silly sounding? Sure. Not convincing? Possibly. Lacking any ounce of truth? Hardly.

My infatuation with bathrooms dates back to my first bathroom remodel (and sadly only to date, but more on that later). I was 14 and taking over my brother’s bedroom upon his heading to college and the process involved fixing up the old master bath, which, I kid you not, had three dimensional bamboo wallpaper. Let loose in the remodel fixtures store, I fell for antique styled knobs and chrome detailing. And since no prices were listed, it wasn’t until later that my dad would reveal that I ended up picking the most expensive set in the store. Sorry, Dad!

Fast-forward to today, I have loved bathrooms ever since. While the first project only included vintage-inspired fixtures, I coveted more oldness. When I was house hunting a few years ago, I fell hard for art deco colored tiles and “hot” and “cold” x-shaped knobs. I was also filled with rage when I’d visit a home built in 1924 and discover a bland, modern sandstone bathroom, knowing full well that a beautiful, fully functional vintage bathroom had stood there originally.

Sadly, my latest proposed bathroom remodel was never able to come to fruition due to permit and zoning issues (damn you Los Angeles and your reasonable rules!). Yet my Pinterest board remains and one can see a clear pattern develop: a fondness for white subway tiles with dark grey grout and penny tiled floors. I’m not sure if it’s the crisp white and black combination or hint of nostalgia for all things old, but I am forever smitten. Below you will find just a bit of my Pinterest board featuring some of my favorite subway and penny-tiled loos.
